What happened to Adoption?

Being pregnant because of rape is a hard scenario. Adoption I think is the best option if the woman can't/won't keep the child herself.

Last night at a friends I watched 60 minutes on ovarian cancer and your heart goes out when seeing these wives and husbands in tears because they can't have children after a woman undergoes a hysterectomy.

In my small circle of friends I know of a few couples who can't have babies and had to adopt children from overseas and all the troubles they had to go through. I would be surprised if you dear reader have not known people in this circumstance.

Infertility is very high in Australia due to women having babies later in life because of careers (Most abortions are by women who are well educated)

Thousands of women in Australia would love to adopt children however due to legal difficulties and huge waiting lists this is done over a period of years with great difficulty. Australia has 100 000 abortions a year and less then 72 babies born in Australia get adopted (2003).

Clarification from Last Post: Choice of a Child's Gender
Deciding the gender of a child at the moment can be done with over 90% accuracy by selecting sperm carrying the Y Chromosome to be a boy and sperm carrying a X chromosome to be a girl. Places like Australia where medicine is the best in the world could easily give women this choice which is why our politicians recently discussed it and united they stood in disagreement and horrified at giving parents such a choice. Parents who have 7 boys and would like a girl may enjoy this choice.

Ethical Dilemma
Of course selecting a child's sex is an ethical dilemma because where do you stop? In times to come mothers could be selecting hair colour, skin colour, height perhaps even intelligence. Adolf Hitler aspired to this.

I would like to point out that the line was crossed when women could claim back the cost of an abortion on medicare. (Free Australian health insurance courtesy of the tax payer).

In regards to your first statement "Being pregnant because of rape is a hard scenario" I agree, totally. But one must consider the alternatives, you are right that adoption is a viable option. Many women would believe that abortion would be easier as they would not have to deal with carrying the child to term and also with the knowledge that the child of a rapist is out there somewhere not to mention it ever contacting them years down the track.
A woman who has been raped has definatly been violated - the answer is not abortion. The ramifications of abortion are huge!!!! A woman who has been raped does not need to suffer an abortion as well!

"Feelings of rejection, low self-esteem, guilt and depression are all ingredients for suicide, and the rate of suicide attempts among aborted women is phenomenally high. According to one study, women who have had abortions are nine times more likely to attempt suicide than women in the general population." Randy Alcorn in Pro life answers to pro choice questions.

Women who have been raped do not need the added stress and misery that an abortion offers. This argument put forward by pro choicers should be exposed for what it is - women who have been raped have had someting taken away from them they have been violated - lets not allow this to happen to them again with an abortion - to take away an innocent child and 'rape' them all over again.

I am not sure that I see a problem with selecting the gender of your baby. If this is done prior to conception than there is no issue with messing with a living person. Selecting the most viable sperm for gender is no worse i guess than using contraception such as condoms (although some would argue this is wrong).
can anyone give any arguements against this?? I know many women who would love a little girl after many boys!

Very good points katie. You gave the answer to the rape scenario far better then I did.

Our politicians that are so heavily PRO-CHOICE when it comes to abortion are ANTI-CHOICE when it comes to selecting gender which is done before conception as you pointed out.

To answer your question the reasons why selecting gender is wrong. This can be seen in china where girls are aborted because they are only aloud 1 child and boys are more valuable with farm work. If everyone had the choice of the sex of the child then you would throw out the equilibrium.

Also where do you stop? If you can select gender then I am sure you can select hair colour and skin colour? In a couple of years couples could go to the doctor to create their baby.

This is a hard one and you have explained the other side of this argument very well.

I would say that the woman who keeps the child or adopts the child out would have great blessing on her life and that if she is a Christian then she has the promises that God is working all things together for her good even the pregnancy from the rape. This as I see it is in the best interest of the woman.

Conversely if this has happened to a woman and she has had an abortion then no amount of counciling will ever help her even though at times she may forget. This woman's only hope is in Jesus to take away her heavy burden and when he does she will be free indeed.
