Here is an extract given to University students studying to become primary teachers:
Childcare as Christian Teaching ...everyone was responsible for his or her salvation. The early Lutherans and Calvinists saw reading the Bible as the road to salvation. They believed each person was born in utter depravity and needed to know the signs of God's offerings of grace and salvation. Not everyone was chosen, but if you were, and missed the opportunity out of ignorance of God's Word, then you were lost forever.....
Child Care As Rescue
The Calvinistic ideas of predestination and utter depravity came to be replaced in the mainstream of the protestant community by a belief in progress and human improvablity.
It was his belief in the improvablity of the poor that led the Protestant pastor Jean-Frederic Oberlin, 1770, to hire Sarah Banzet as the first day care teachers. (taught the children how to knit and eventually started a childcare textile industry)

If you are reading this and you understand what calvinism is compared to what this author wrote you know that the author has no idea. The whole gist of the book is to show how the puritans who bought children up in the strict disciplines of the scripture, who agreed with scripture about smacking their children and continually emphasised the importance of being born again were harmful to children. Education became the new Savior for children and the new model for bringing up children.
The school system of Australia/U.S/EU is fatally flawed. I say this because the small thread of our puritan past is becoming less and less. Education and acceptance of all types of immorality is taught and the schools have never been in a worse state.
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matt 10:21-22
